I am SO SO excited to be able to share my first baby-related review with you all today! 🙂
After writing my initial cloth diaper post, I contacted KaWaii Baby Diapers about possibly reviewing their product here on the blog. And well, several weeks later here we are!
I am very proud to say that KaWaii is a Canadian company run out of British Colombia. Their diapers are made in China and are Oeko-Tex and OCIA (Organic crop Improvement Association) certified.
So let’s start off with the New Improved Original Square.
New and improved Original Squared has a double-layered premium waterproof outer shell, highly water-resistant but is additionally air permeable. Durable, reduces the risks of membrane separation as compared to traditional waterproof materials.
This two-part cloth diaper system consists of 2 parts, fit babies from 8-36lbs:
- Waterproof outer cover
- Two large microfiber inserts
The Cover has a pocket opening located in the inner layer to accommodate microfiber inserts. Once stuffed, it is just like an (AIO) All In One Diaper. The outer shell itself can also be use as a diaper cover over your favorite prefold or fitted diapers.
Super soft microfleece inner layer, moisture will absorb quickly to the inserts. Your baby will love the softness!
Environmentally Friendly Microfiber Inserts
The Inserts (or soaker pads) are made from 100% unbleached microfiber. The material has many tiny strands and is environmentally friendly. It has 40x more absorbent surface than cotton and is less bulky. They are soft and easy to clean.
We include 2 large absorbent microfiber inserts in each diaper – one for daytime and the second for nighttime or heavy wetter.
- Wider Pocket Opening for Easy Stuffing
- Hip Snaps – Prevent Wing Drooping
- Front Panel – Prevent leakage for babies sleeping on their tummy
- Weight: 8-36 lbs.
- Rise: 13.5″ – 19.5″
- Waist” 14” – 28”
- Length: 19.5”
- Crotch: 7.5″
At first glance, the softness of this diaper was what I noticed. I knew right away that Amy would be liking having this one on her wee bum. 😉
My #1 favourite thing about these diapers = THE FIT. In comparison to the other diapers in my ‘stash’, the Kawaii seem to have the best fit on my lean little baby. At 4 months old and 13 pounds, Amy wears these on the highest rise. As you can see in the photo below, although I have these set to pretty much the smallest size, there isn’t a lot of extra bulk. The extra bulk would have to be my number one complaint with some of the other brands that I own.
It has 2 waterproof layers build into the diaper, which makes this diaper slightly more leak-proof in comparison to others in our stash. I have had leaks with almost every other diaper I own, and after over a month of usage, I have yet to see a leak in this Kawaii model.
TWO big thumbs up from this momma!! 🙂
Next Up, The OS Bamboo Minky
- Multiple Tummy Cross Over Snaps to fit smaller waist
- Hip Snap Buttons help prevent Wing Drooping
- Three Rows of Rise Snap Buttons transform the diapers from newborn thru potty
- Front Panel – Avoid Leaking for Babies Sleeping on their Tummy
- Wider Back Pocket with flap – easy stuff and remove inserts
- 30 % more moisture absorption, high fiber density thus it’s heavier
Good For Babies, Parents And The Environment
Bamboo grows in a non-polluted natural environment. The cross-section of the bamboo fiber is filled with various micro gaps and micro holes, it has much better moisture absorption and ventilation. With its unparalleled structure, it absorbs and evaporates in a split second. Bamboo is also biodegradable so it will naturally decompose. Bamboo fabric can adjust to your body temperature, when you touch the surface of the insert, you will feel it is cooler than the regular inserts.
The outer shell is made of Minky, which is a polyester plush velour that feels like mink fur. It is a high quality, durable and soft fabric. Laminated with the new and improved Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU), a composition specifically adapted to produce non-porous membranes exhibiting waterproof and water vapor transmissible. The result is a high performance, durable, excellent water-resistant, cut and tear resistant and soft diaper.
The inner lining is made of Grade A 100% Organic Bamboo fiber. Each diaper comes with two bamboo inserts. Size Large: 14 cm x 37 cm. Insert is made of three layers of Grade A 100% organic Bamboo. For use on smaller babies or newborn, it is long enough to fold in half, which gives you twelve layers of extra absorbency.
Our bamboo Insert is super soft, and thinner than the microfiber insert. It can be used inside the pocket of the diaper or laid on top. The pocket is located at the back of the diaper.
Five Incredible Benefits
Hypoallergenic– Bamboo’s organic and naturally smooth fiber properties are non-irritating to the skin, making it ideal for people with skin sensitivities or other allergies and dermatitis.
Thermal regulating– Ensures that you are warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Bamboo’s excellent wicking properties makes it ideal for warm summer days.
Absorbency– A cross section of bamboo fiber reveals various micro-holes, allowing the diapers to have superior absorption. Absorbs up to 60% than cotton.
Breathable – The porous qualities of bamboo fiber gives great breathability and is extremely comfortable against baby skin.
Anti-bacterial- Bamboo fabric contains a natural occurring anti-microbial agent that prevents bacteria from cultivating, which means odor free!
Caring for your Bamboo Diapers
You can machine wash and dry bamboo cloth diapers on the gentle cycle. It is recommended that you remove them from the dryer as soon as the cycle is done. Some data suggests that bamboo can be fragile when wet.
- Weight: 8-36 lbs
- Rise: 13.5″ – 19.5″
- Waist” 14” – 28”
- Length: 19.5”
- Crotch: 7.5″
This is my first and only bamboo diaper and I must say that I am very impress with the overall softness of the bamboo fabric. The softness of the outer minky fabric makes this particular diaper one of Amy’s favourites to play with. 😉
Much like the other diaper, the fit is amazing!! Kawaii definitely gets a 10/10 for fit on lean and slender babies! When paired with one of my heavy soaker inserts, this now makes 2 diapers in my stash that I have yet to have any leakage issues with.
Honestly overall, I wish I had more Kawaii diapers in my stash. I say this simply for the reason that they FIT INCREDIBLY on Amy (it’s also a big plus that they have so many awesome colours and patterns!). I may have overlooked Kawaii when I first began looking into cloth diapers due to their crazy low price-point. The two diapers I reviewed today can be purchased for $7.15 and $10.90 respectively. I actually though that since they were at such a low price, that they couldn’t be a great diaper. Considering the fact that these 2 diapers have quickly become my two favourites, I can easily say that I was SO SO wrong!!! If you’re thinking about shopping for some cloth diapers, please do not overlook Kawaii like I had done initially. Support a Canadian company and you’ll get some fantastic product in return! 🙂
